Five Simple Steps to a Clean, Tidy, & Organized Garage Workshop

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Below are the five simple and easy steps to turn your garage into the perfect small home workshop. Not only will these simple steps get you a nice place to work, they will not cost an arm and a leg for you to achieve your goal.

1. Build your own workbench from an old flat door and some sturdy sawhorses.
If you don’t have any old sawhorses or don’t want to spend the money you can use scrap lumber for the legs instead. Securely attach the legs to the door and then anchor the legs to the floor and back wall.

2. On the wall above your work bench, mount a sheet or two of pegboard to store all or most of your tools.
Strategically place the pegs according to the size and type of tools you will be putting on the board. Personally I like to keep similar tools together in groups. Like having screwdrivers in one area and wrenches in another. This helps tremendously in quickly finding the right tool you need. Once you hang and arrange all your tools the way you want them, it’s a good idea to trace around them with a marker or sharpie. This will make it much easier when you clean up after working on your projects to easily know where each tool goes. Also it will be quite obvious to quickly see if any are missing and maybe got left behind somewhere inside the house.
